Video of the wedding of Robert Anthony Curtis and Angela Gillott on September 23rd, 1978, at St James’ Church, Norton Lees, Sheffield.

The film was originally taken with a Super 8mm cine camera by the bridegroom’s father, Frank Fowler Curtis of Skegness.

Several years later, the film was transferred to video by projecting the original footage onto a screen and filming the screen with a VHS camcorder – don’t forget there were no personal computers back in those days! As technology advanced, I was able to transfer the VHS version onto DVD, and finally onto a pc.

The original footage, along with all my other cine films, some almost fifty years old, has sadly been lost.

Even with its poor quality, the wedding film is a valuable record of a family event, particularly when, thirtytwo years on, several close family members are deceased.

Tilly’s Walk

The video was shot on 5th November, 2002/3, and was the first video that I edited.

Death of Martha Houghton

We regret to record the death of Miss Martha Houghton, who passed away at her residence in Roman Bank, Skegness on Friday last. The deceased, whose age was 58, was a member of an old and highly-respected local family, her farthwer, Charles Houghton, being one of the pioneers of Skegness and one of the first members of the old Local Board.

For several years now, since the death of her mother, which was keenly felt by her, the deceased had not enjoyed good health, but prior to that was a prominent member of the local Wesleyan Church, her services therein greatly valued.

The funeral took place on Monday last, when the Rev. S Rathmell conducted a short service at the Wesleyan Church in the presence of mourning relatives and friends. The hymns, “Give me the wings of faith to rise” and “Rock of Ages” were feelingly sung.

The principal mourners were:
Mr C Houghton (father), Mrs and Mr Jenkinson (sister and brother-in-law), Mr and Mrs Wilkinson (sister and brother-in-law), Mr and Mrs C Houghton (brother and sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs J W Houghton (brother and sisier-in-law), Mrs Dodds (niece), Mr Wilkinson (nephew), Mr J S Fowler (cousin), Miss Ellen Maria Fowler (cousin) and Nurse Walker.

The coffin, which was of plain oak with brass mountings, bore the following inscription:
MARTH HOUGHON
DIED MAY 28TH 1915
AGED 58 YEARS

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr Frank Wood, and the coffin was borne by Messersd Panton, Wilkinson, Archer and J T Moody. The grave was lined with purple and narcissus.

Memorial inscription reads – In affectionate rememberance of
Martha A second daughter of Charles and Eliza Houghton who
departed this life 28th May 1915 aged 58 years. He giveth his
beloved sleep.

Roan & Steven Curtis Boys Brigade

Roan and Steven joined the Skegness Boys’ Brigade in 1989/1990 and the video clip below was taken after their first session at the club in St Paul’s Baptist Church, Beresford Avenue, Skegness. The film was shot in 1989/1990 in the kitchen of the brothers’ home at 43 Briar Way, Skegness.
The password for the video is ‘skegness’.

RAF Airman Harry Gillott

Harry Gillott was killed in action in April 1940 during World War 2. A few months before his death, in December, 1939, he took part in the Battle of Heligoland. The archive news reel below shows Harry and his fellow crewmen as their Wellington Bomber landed in England after the sortie.
